Kit - Boats

Our boats are all composite (fibreglass) specialist sea kayaks manufactured by North Shore.

Claire and Pete paddle Polars, and Wendy has an Atlantic.  There are full details of these on the North Shore website.  We have all paddled these types of boat for many years, and are fully confident in their characteristics and handling.  We know the build quality and are confident that it will see the boats through the rigours of the trip.  Although Wendy and Pete have have upgraded their boats to the latest design, with VCP hatches and the larger cockpit, they have replaced rather well worn and battered boats of the same designs.

For the non-paddler:  They are just short of 5 metres long with watertight compartments in front and behind the cockpit (the bit we sit in!).  These are accessed from the top through watertight hatches on the deck, and in total they can hold the equivalent of two decent sized rucksacks.  Into this space we have to get our camping gear - tent, sleeping bag and mat, food, spare clothes (not many!), stove, pans, plates etc, more food, emergency gear (first aid, boat repair kit etc).  Any spare spaces will be filled with...food.

On the deck, we'll be carrying spare paddles, map and compass, marine VHF radio, towing rig, solar charger and a deck bag with odds and sods of choice, which can include spare hat and gloves, sunglasses, suncream, lip salve, plasters, distress flares, emergency patch kits, camera, binoculars, food (on-the-water nibbles and energy bars)
